The Mountain Exposition Award Winners

The Mountain Exposition category includes guidebooks and “how-to” books dealing with a physical activity in a mountain area. There are two lists of books on this page. The first list includes all of the winners in the Mountain Exposition category since the award was first made in 1995. The second list includes all of the finalists. Please note that a number of these books are still unavailable in the US (at least through Amazon.com) and that these are shown in red.

Year   Mountain Exposition Winning Titles and Author
2006

Burbage, Millstone And Beyond
David Simmonite, editor; Niall Grimes, series editor

Comments from the jury include:

bulletAn accessible but detailed mix of history, first-ascent lore, lists of bouldering problems, maps, and photography. Jury member Audrey Salkeld says the book “seems to have learned all the lessons of what constitutes a good and easily accessible guide.”
2005

Longs Peak: The Story of Colorado’s Favourite Fourteener
Dougald MacDonald

Comments from the jury include:

bullet“A neat and comprehensive introduction to stuff in your backpack. Modest, accessible, it does its job attractively.”
bullet“This is as much a love letter as a history of Longs Peak.”
2004 Ice & Mixed Climbing: Modern Technique
Will Gadd and Roger Chayer

A blend of step-by-step instruction and real-life stories, the book is described by jury members as “utterly bang up-to-date, as Gadd’s still at the top of his game”.

2003 The Bugaboos
Chris Atkinson and Marc Piché

The book is written by Canadian mountain guides Chris Atkinson and Marc Piché. It is a climbers’ guide to the Bugaboos and Vowells, one of the world’s great alpine rock climbing centres. "The job of a climbing guidebook is to inform, invite, and inspire," says jury member Greg Child. "This entry does all of that, in compact form and with clear presentation. Pure and simple, it just makes you want to get off the couch and stuff your fists in a granite crack."

2002 Selkirks South
David P. Jones

"This is a book that will change how we measure our mountains in Canada, and that’s a remarkable achievement," says Geoff Powter, a 2002 jury member.
2001 Fifty Favorite Climbs: The Ultimate North American Tick List
Mark Kroese

Maria Coffey, a 2001 jury member, comments, "I like the way we get to know each climber, and learn about their chosen climb through both their personal experience of it and the comprehensive route description."
2000 A Hiker's Guide To The Rocky Mountain Art Of Lawren Harris
Lisa Christenson

1999 Extreme Alpinism: Climbing Light, Fast, and High
Mark Twight and James Martin

A master class on extreme alpine climbing by one of the world's most elite mountaineers. Focusing on how top alpine climbers approach the world's most difficult routes, Twight centres his instruction on the ethos of climbing the hardest routes with the least amount of gear and the most speed. "You can either read Twight's book or beat yourself up in the mountains learning the same lessons," says jury member Will Gadd.
1998 Going Higher: Oxygen, Man and Mountains
Charles Houston

Jury member Bob
Sandford says the jury faced a particularly difficult problem choosing between Going Higher and High Altitude Medicine by Dr. Herb Hultgren. "These were two great books on high altitude physiology written by two famous researchers being entered in the same year in the same category," he says. "They are written by renowned world experts, both with decades of experience, both good writers, both citing many of the same sources and both citing each other's work in books that define the limits about what we know about high altitude physiology today".
1997 Advanced Rock Climbing
John Long and Graig Leubben
1996 Dawson's Guide To Colorado's Fourteeners: Northern Peaks and Dawson's Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners: Southern Peaks
Louis Dawson
1995 Handbook Of The Canadian Rockies
Ben Gadd
1994 Classic Hikes in the Canadian Rockies
Graeme Pole
